What is the point of social media?
It's often discussed social media is a negative force, and attention is directed towards the algorithm, in how slop content (usually ragebait, political matters and/or low quality memes) is pushed to the front of the queue because it is easy to produce, can attract a lot of attention and engagement.
This is one side of the coin, we have to pay equal attention to the sort of users that roam ths social media sphere. Before we do so, let's ask ourselves, what is the point of social media?
Is it to express yourself? No. Because social media sites will restrict what you have to say if it falls outside of the official narrative. On top of that, actual users' opinions do not matter (for example, Google's decision to remove the Dislike counter from videos, a widely unpopular decision that benefitted only channels run by corporations that saw their content mass disliked), you do not truly own your space on social media platforms, unless you buy a domain and host your own website.
Is it to provide valuable knowledge? No. Because the algorithm will simply promote users and channels that mass produce low quality memes everyday (usually copied from other users and sites) rather than a channel that might upload only once a week or month. Alternatively, ragebait/clickbait content gets more views, so naturally this also gets to the top.
Is it to keep up to date with important news? No. In fact, checking in to be up to date on what's going on is a quasi-narcistitic trait, why do you think you should have to know about what's going on in parts of the country or world? The fact I don't know about a certain terrorist attack in X country, or a school shooting in Y country, or how a factory in Z country collapsed killing thousands of workers, that's actually the norm. It's the people who know about these things that are unusual. Because the fact you had to look up the news demonstrates that it has no relevance to you.
People should stay in their lane and focus on what's happening in their own local area. Not to mention, it's depressing to look at the news and hear about a tragedy that happened in some other part of the world, who does this benefit? Certainly not us. Besides, that's assumign the news actually does show you accurate information, but the news is never going to show you what you really ought to know, so even if social media did do a good job in telling you the news, it's pointless.
Is it to earn money? To suggest social media or the internet is a place to earn money is like suggesting the pavement is a place to advertise sex services to car goers. Sure, you *could* do that, but that wasn't and shouldn't be the intended purpose. The pavement is for walking, to get from point a to point b. If social media is supposed to represent a virtual kind of real life discussion, think about how bizzare it would be if a random person walked up to you and started advertising his ecommerce course where you can earn millions of euros a month? Of course, we're talking about the real internet. It's funny how people are shocked to hear that North Koreans are unable to access the global internet, instead they are restricted to a domestic service known as the Kwangmyong, yet most of these people are restrict themselves to sites like F*cebook, Tw*tter, R*ddit, etc.
So, actual expressive people (such as Ashley Jones) are shadowbanned in favour of Fortnite twitch streamers, actual knowledgeable people (such as Luke Smith) don't hit the algorithm but some idiot talking about the latest YouTube drama does, real news like how your money is being valued less per day is beneath news like what random thing a random celebrity did at a random place and how that "pwned" the liberals or conservatives, etc.
And think about the type of people who, therefore, go on these sites? These people are either kids who like watching grown men hit buttons on game controllers, manchildren that still cant figure out YouTube drama is done on purpose to generate views, and low-lifes think they're so important, they just have to know what is The Current Alt thing.
And YOU have to deal with these people! So, what are the consequences of this? LET'S FIND OUT!
Autistic psychopathy
Upon entering R*ddit, I searched for a controversial topic, “fat shamed” and came across this thread.
Now, what would you suggest the solution to be? Well, I’m thinking right now “Lose some fucking weight!” but of course, as we will see, that’s not the socially-correct answer, instead it’s....
”Confront them.” What the hell is that going to do? “Hey, you were talking shit about it.” “Shut up, fat whore.”
”Just say a witty one liner.”
”I would go for the nuclear or catty options” This is just plain retarded. Look at how many upvotes this got too.
And this is just one example, back when I used to browse R*ddit, I recalled a thread where
- A white girlfriend posted about how her white boyfriend believes saying racial slurs within context is acceptable, despite her insistence that he stops. She was told to “break up with that racist!” It doesn’t matter whether he is a good boyfriend or not, he said naughty words so this relationship must go.
- Somebody complained about their neighbour parking their car in front of their house, and the top comments was “when he’s about to drive off in the morning, get in front of his car so that he won’t have enough room to get out!” What a cartoon logic, what’s going to happen then? There’s no screen fading to black while the audience laughs and the credit rolls, how long is the guy supposed to stand there? And how is that going to solve the issue? The neighbor can call the police, inform them he exercised his right to park outside of his neighbor’s house which is a public area, and have the original poster fined or jail.
- There was a thread where someone was complaining that their co-worker had taken credit for an idea of theirs and was rewarded handsomely for it. The solution? “Tell people to clap for him, cheer for him, make him feel embarrassed by overshowing him with compliments. Tell others what a great worker he is in front of him!” The solution was to be a cuck about it, to cuck so hard he’d be “embarrassed” what idiot thinks a guy that can shamelessly take credit for someone’s idea is going to feel embarrassed that he’s getting complimented superficially?
You might be inclined to think “These are sarcastic comments” they were not, these were top upvoted comments where you had people discuss in great detail about how “one time” this worked for a friend of theirs or how this will “psychological” make the person feel X. Look at the example above with the fat chick, do these comments strike you as “sarcastic”? These people are psychopaths at best or autistic at worse.
In fact, I recall a thread regarding Russian warcrimes in Ukraine, the top comments people were discussing about how Russia should be expelled from the United Nations Security Council and therefore lose its veto power, and these high IQ idiots brought up Communist China and Taiwan as examples “well, technically, Taiwan lost its seat at the UNSC because the People’s Republic of China is considered the successor to mainland China, and so, Kazakhstan was the last Soviet republic so therefore they can be considered the successor to the USSR” these autists were actually pulling up clauses from the United Nations charter actually justifying how this could happen. It was like reading 4channers explain how Hitler could’ve won the Second World War if he had invaded the region of Skibidski first instead of Amogustov.
