The internet is fake and irrelevant.
When I first began this website in June of 2025, I had nefarious reasons which I only realise now. I was chronically watching YouTube videos and browsing Reddit posts. When i came across Luke Smith's channel, and after binge watching his videos, I decided to give one of his suggestions a try which was to start my own website (he also advocated for less technology usage, but this part went over my head).
I began this website, and over the months I made it quite complicated by adding unnecessary pages, as well as implementing features such as my own imageboard, a PeerTube instance, and even an onion link. I find those to be really cool, however, it's not relevant and needed in my particular circumstance.
What I had done was the equivalent of an alcoholic trying to recover by brewing his own drinks. I tried to make the internet a better place, but instead, I was still playing by their rules. I'm reminded of the WarGames 1983 quote, "strange game, the only winning move is not to play".
The internet is fake, not in the sense that its intangible, but rather it appears to be something it is not, it appears to resolve issues it has created.
We form parasocial relationships with content creators who would flinch if we walked up to them on the street, we interact with others, forming connections that can tear apart with a simple shutting off the device, we watch videos without learning, we produce essays, videos, that go over people's heads because they only want to feel like they're learning, and not actually learning. We are influenced by ideas that have no relevance to our lives, we are unsocialised because we lack real life connections, so we end up absorbing ideas and beliefs of others which aren't relevant to ours.
We try to find our fixes with the internet. No friends? Go on social media and find content creators to follow. No relationships? Go find an e-girl streamer to interact with. Boring life? Make your website too convoluted and extravagant to appear as something you're not. Lack of meaning? Find political websites and consume the news. No hobbies? Watch other people do hobbies. No attention? Post ragebait comment and videos to get interactions and dopamine hits.
All of this can be flushed away, just by pressing the Power Off button. What's real about that?
The internet is a sea of information, and you might very well learn correct information, but how is it relevant? if you live amongst a group of people who believe the sky is green, and that was how you were raised, only to find out the sky is actually blue upon going on the internet, how did that benefit you? it didn't, instead, you're now a contrast to the people around you, you're now "werid", and your quality of life will have declined. This is the issue with "inceligent" people, they know a lot, yet it means nothing in real life, it could even be detrimental.
Of course, that's assuming the information we learn from the internet is even true to begin with.
The internet is here, and we can never opt out of this strange game, unless we're willing to move into the woods (and that comes with its own set of challenges). Instead we have to adapt, we have to be mindful of our usage, we have to ask ourselves what really matters.
